What this article is about:
This article explores how multinational enterprises (MNEs) contribute to achieving the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The authors gather and combine insights from three main sources: corporate websites of selected MNEs, academic literature, and expert opinions from scholars in the field. These sources help trace the evolving role of MNEs in supporting the SDGs over time. The literature highlights that ‘responsible consumption and production,’ ‘no poverty,’ ‘peace, justice and strong institutions,’ and ‘climate action’ receive the most academic focus. Corporate websites and scholarly views show a similar emphasis, particularly on ‘responsible consumption and production’ and ‘climate action,’ which consistently emerge as top priorities.
By comparing these various sources, the study uncovers patterns in how MNEs prioritize specific strategies and shape sustainability strategies accordingly. The analysis provides valuable insights for both scholars and business leaders. Theoretical contributions enhance understanding of the intersection between global enterprises and sustainable development, while managerial insights offer practical guidance for incorporating United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into corporate agendas. Additionally, the study outlines possible paths for future research, encouraging further investigation into the strategic involvement of MNEs in sustainability initiatives.
Through this integrated approach, the article highlights the crucial function MNEs serve in promoting sustainable practices across industries and regions. The findings underscore the alignment between corporate communication and academic interest in key sustainability themes, illustrating how MNEs can act as powerful agents for positive global change when they align business goals and strategies with broader social and environmental priorities.
